You made it to mid-July. The boat’s been in the water, the summer has been everything it should be, and Lake Granbury has delivered. But here’s the thing — the back half of summer is actually when your boat takes the most punishment.
By this point in the season, your hull has absorbed weeks of UV exposure, algae growth, mineral deposits from the water, and the general wear that comes with regular use. If you started the season without a protective coating, that damage is compounding every single week. And if you did coat it — now’s the time to make sure that protection is holding up the way it should.
Here’s your mid-season boat check to keep your vessel looking great and protected through the rest of summer and beyond.
1. Inspect Your Hull for Waterline Buildup
The waterline is the first place to show mid-season neglect. By July, most boats are showing some combination of:
- Scum line buildup — a dark ring where the water surface meets the hull
- Mineral deposits from Lake Granbury’s water
- Light algae growth on the hull below the waterline
- UV fading starting to show on unprotected gelcoat above the waterline
If you’re seeing any of these, a mid-season detail will remove the buildup before it bonds more permanently to the surface. The longer mineral deposits and algae sit, the harder they are to remove without aggressive compounding — which means more work and more cost down the road.
2. Check Your Gelcoat and Fiberglass Condition
Run your hand along the hull above the waterline. If it comes away chalky or the surface looks dull compared to early season, UV oxidation is already starting. In Texas summer heat — especially on the water where UV reflects off the surface — unprotected gelcoat can fade noticeably in just a few months.
What to look for:
- Dullness or loss of gloss compared to spring
- Chalky residue when you wipe the surface
- Color fading, especially on darker hulls
- Fine surface scratches from docking, trailering, or debris
Catching oxidation mid-season and treating it now is significantly cheaper than letting it go until fall when it’s fully set in.
3. Rinse and Wash After Every Outing
This sounds basic but it’s the single most effective maintenance habit you can build. Lake water — even fresh water — leaves behind minerals and contaminants that bond to gelcoat and fiberglass over time. A quick freshwater rinse after every outing removes the surface layer before it has a chance to etch into the finish.
If your boat is ceramic coated, washing is dramatically easier — water and contaminants bead off the surface rather than bonding to it. For uncoated boats, a rinse alone isn’t enough. You need a proper wash with a pH-neutral marine soap at least every 2–3 outings to stay ahead of the buildup.
4. Protect Your Vinyl and Interior
The interior takes just as much UV punishment as the exterior — maybe more, since it’s directly exposed every time you’re on the water. Mid-season interior care includes:
- Wipe down all vinyl seating with a marine-safe cleaner to remove sunscreen, sweat, and grime before it stains permanently
- Treat vinyl with a UV protectant — this is the single best thing you can do to prevent cracking and fading through the back half of summer
- Clean all glass surfaces inside and out — salt from spray and sunscreen residue builds up fast and reduces visibility
- Check for mildew in any areas that stay damp — under seat cushions, in storage compartments, around the bilge
5. Consider Marine Ceramic Coating Now — Not Just in the Spring
Most people think of ceramic coating as a spring thing. And while spring is ideal, mid-summer is actually a perfectly viable time to coat — and here’s why it makes sense right now:
You still have the entire back half of summer ahead of you, plus Labor Day weekend, plus fall fishing season on Lake Granbury. That’s 3–4 more months of use where a coating would be protecting your investment every single day.
At OCDetailing, we apply FEYNLAB HYDRO Marine Ceramic Coating — one of the most advanced marine-specific coatings available. It bonds directly to your gelcoat or fiberglass, creating a hydrophobic barrier that:
- Repels lake water, minerals, and algae
- Blocks UV rays that cause oxidation and fading
- Makes every wash dramatically faster and easier
- Protects your boat’s finish for years, not months
We’re one of the very few shops in Texas offering certified marine ceramic coating, and we’re right here in Granbury — minutes from the lake.

The end-of-season maintenance detail in October is exactly what your boat needs before winter storage — we’ll remove the season’s buildup, inspect the coating, and make sure your vessel is protected and ready to store correctly. Normally priced at $20 per linear foot, it’s on us when you book your coating in July.

6. End-of-Season Planning Starts Now
If you’re not ready for a coating this month, start thinking about what your boat needs before it goes into storage. The worst thing you can do is store a boat with a season’s worth of contaminants, oxidation, and buildup sitting on the surface all winter — it etches in, sets permanently, and makes spring prep significantly harder and more expensive.
We’ll be posting our full end-of-season boat storage checklist in October — but if you want to get ahead of it, give us a call and we’ll walk you through exactly what your specific vessel needs.
