We have all been there. Your car is dirty, you are short on time, and the local automatic car wash offers a “Premium Shine” for $15. It seems like a quick, easy fix.
But as professional detailers, we cringe every time we see a nice vehicle heading into those tunnels.
At OCDetailing, a huge portion of our Paint Correction work is dedicated to fixing the damage caused by automatic car washes. Here is the truth about what really happens inside the tunnel.
1. The “Slap-Wrap” Brushes (The Sandpaper Effect)
Those giant spinning brushes that slap against your car? They cleaned a muddy pickup truck right before you pulled in. And the SUV before that. And the minivan before that.
These brushes retain dirt, grit, and brake dust from every vehicle they touch. When they spin against your car at high speed, they act like fine-grit sandpaper. This creates thousands of tiny scratches known as swirl marks or “spider webbing.”
Over time, these scratches dull your paint, making it look flat and gray instead of deep and glossy.
2. The “Touchless” Myth
“Okay,” you might think, “I’ll just use the Touchless wash.”
While better than friction washes, touchless washes have a different problem: Chemical Aggression.
Since nothing is physically touching the car to wipe away dirt, these washes rely on extremely harsh chemicals (often highly acidic or highly alkaline) to dissolve grime.
- Stripping Protection: These chemicals are strong enough to strip away waxes and sealants in a single pass.
- Drying Out Trim: Repeated exposure can turn your black plastic trim gray and brittle.
- Staining: If the soap isn’t rinsed perfectly (which often happens), it can etch your glass and paint.
3. The Towel Dry
If you go to a full-service tunnel, there is usually a team at the end waiting to dry your car.
They are often using the same towels they used on the wheels of the last 50 cars. By the time they touch your hood, those towels are loaded with grease and brake dust. It’s essentially a final scratch-inducing wipe-down to finish the job.
The OCDetailing Difference: The Two-Bucket Method
There is only one safe way to wash a car: By hand.
When we wash a vehicle at OCDetailing, we use:
- pH-Neutral Soaps: Tough on dirt, safe on wax and coatings.
- Microfiber Mitts: Cleaned regularly to ensure no grit is trapped.
- The Two-Bucket Method: One bucket for soap, one for rinsing the wash mitt. This ensures we never put a dirty mitt back onto your paint.
- Forced Air Drying: We blow water out of crevices to prevent drips, touching the paint as little as possible.
Stop Paying to Scratch Your Car
Your vehicle is likely the second biggest investment you will make. Don’t ruin its finish for the sake of 10 minutes of convenience.
If you have already suffered “tunnel wash trauma,” don’t worry—we can fix it. Our Paint Correction services can level out those swirl marks and restore your gloss.
